Experience

Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) is the world's leading port investor, developer and operator with interests in a total of 308 berths in 51 ports, spanning 25 countries throughout Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Americas and Australasia. HPH also owns a number of transportation-related service companies. In 2009, the HPH Group handled a combined throughput of 65.3 million TEU worldwide.

The history of HPH began in 1866 when the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company was established in Hong Kong as Registered Company Number One. For over 100 years, it provided ship construction and repair services before diversifying into cargo and container handling operations in 1969 when its flagship operation, Hongkong International Terminals (HIT), was established. In 1994, HPH was founded to manage HIT's growing international port network.

Drawing on HIT's extensive experience, HPH has expanded worldwide. The Group now has ports and related operations that span the entire logistics chain, providing customers with a full range of value-added benefits that include container storage and repair, container tracking, general and bulk cargo transfer, warehousing, marine shuttle services, and other related services.

HPH is subsidiary of the diversified Hutchison Whampoa Limited (HWL). The Chairman of HWL is Mr. Li Ka-shing. HWL's ultimate shareholder is Cheung Kong (Holdings) Limited.

Investment

HPH is committed to playing a significant role in the development of the economies of the countries in which it operates and the expansion of their international trade opportunities.

The Group directly invests in hubs that serve large hinterlands and that either already support international trade or which have the potential to become key transport centres. Furthermore, HPH develops and manages all aspects of port operation and trade-related logistics, transferring proven operational practices to ensure an optimum environment for the development of commerce.

In doing so, it provides local industry with a strong channel to world markets and also promotes the long-term development of local market infrastructure.

People

HPH has more than 30,000 employees, who are among its most important partners. The HPH workforce is made up of people with solid experience and good industry knowledge who are dedicated to providing efficient services. HPH is committed to employee development through ongoing skills training and is able to leverage its worldwide presence to offer employees international career opportunities.

Innovations

HPH has one of the most technology-intensive commercial operations in the transport industry today. Through decades of investment and research in improving operational efficiency, HPH has pioneered innovations in all its operational areas and become one of the world's most advanced port operators.

The Group has a proven record in areas such as process re-engineering, IT infrastructure, and the design and implementation of automated systems. As a result, HPH is a sought-after partner by companies throughout the maritime and transport community.

By increasing the use of IT at its network of ports, HPH has streamlined the transportation supply chain and made local manufacturers and import-export businesses more internationally competitive.

Corporate Social Responsibility

HPH is committed to supporting the communities in which it operates, focusing on a range of education programmes, social-service projects, medical initiatives, environmental-protection efforts and other causes. Spearheading this community service is the HPH Dock School programme, which actively encourages HPH member ports around the world to support local schools.

The Dock School programme has grown significantly since it was first implemented at Hongkong International Terminals in 1992. Over 18 HPH member ports now sponsor their own schools.
