Through social service projects, HPH member ports help improve the lives of the residents of local communities where they operate.

 We support a variety of community service projects. These projects cover enhancements to community facilities, poverty relief efforts, education programmes for the general public, volunteer services, and donations to a wide variety of organisations to benefit orphans, the elderly, and other local residents. Recent examples include:

  • Donated computer equipment to charitable organisations in Argentina. 
  • Partnered with a major cruise line to donate a large quantity of food to Estado 29 orphanage in El Sauzal, north of Ensenada in Mexico.
  • Sponsored a variety of programmes organised by the Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Council to educate the general public.
  • Participated in local road safety campaigns in Hong Kong.
  • Participated in Team Challenge 36, a Hong Kong fundraising event for the Boys' & Girls' Clubs on a yearly basis.


  • Repaired houses for the elderly and the impoverished, donated sacks of rice to single-parent families, and collected books and clothing for the mentally handicapped in Korea.
  • Supported the establishment of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum in Hong Kong by funding its first six years of expenses. 
  • Sponsored a long-term program to give disabled persons in the UK the equipment they need to take up sailing. 
  • Donated to the Xiamen Haicang Senior Citizen Welfare Association in China to help the elderly.
  • Donated to the Xiamen Welfare Institution to help homeless elderly people and abandoned children in China.
  • Donated to the Shenzhen Yantian Charity Community in China to help the poor, the unemployed, and people with serious illness.
  • Celebrated Children's Day with orphans at the Zhuhai Welfare Home in Guangdong, China.
  • Sponsored the construction of Donglin Geracomium in Shanghai's Baoshan District to promote the health of senior citizens.

Medical Support Programmes

HPH recognises the importance of supporting a variety of medical projects to improve the health of residents in the communities where it has ports. Our member ports support medical research, sponsor the establishment of hospital facilities and donate medical equipment. Some recent examples include the following:



  • Sponsored the "Generation R" research project implemented by the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam. The project is a world-leading epidemiology initiative that tracks children's health from conception to adolescence.
  • Sponsored the establishment of the Cancer Patient Resource Center at Princess Margaret Hospital in Hong Kong to help cancer patients and their families receive treatment and information.
  • Paid the yearly maintenance expenses of a room in a local children's cancer-treatment center in Panama.
  • Donated hearing aids to primary school students in Veracruz, Mexico.
Disaster Relief Programmes

When disasters strike our port communities and our host countries, we strive to help victims to rebuild their lives as soon as possible. We understand time is critical, and will extend a helping hand to those in need as soon as possible. HPH member ports have generously donated to the victims of many recent disasters, for example:


  • Donated to victims of heavy rain and flooding in Tabasco, Mexico in 2007.
  • Donated to the victims of the 2006 Central Java earthquake.
  • Made a monetary donation to help victims of Typhoon Bilis, which caused extensive damage in Guangdong Province of China in 2006.
  • Donated money to victims of the 2005 Pakistan earthquake. Employees also agreed to give up one day of their salaries to fund the donation of a truckload of relief goods including tents, medicines, food, and other supplies.
  • Donated to the Shanghai Red Cross in 2003 to help reconstruct schools and Red Cross community stations in Anhui, China after flooding.
  • Donated money to the Shantou Charity Foundation in China to support rebuilding after Typhoon Zhenzhu.
  • Funded the purchase of food and essential supplies for people in East and Central Africa, who were suffering from severe drought conditions.
