Terminal Catalunya (TERCAT) is located in the Port of Barcelona, a major gateway for Spain and Southern Europe. By shipping through Barcelona, shippers can gain valuable time and transportation savings for goods flowing to Europe from Asia.
TERCAT was established in 1990, and, in 2006, HPH became the majority shareholder. The group plans to develop TERCAT into its principal gateway port for Southern Europe. Currently, the facility occupies 47 hectares of land and has 1.08 kilometres of quay with a depth alongside of 14 metres. This gives TERCAT the ability to handle the world's largest containerships.
TERCAT holds the concession to build and operate the new container terminal based at Muelle Prat. The first phase of this development will consist of 1,000 metres of quay with a minimum depth alongside of 16 metres. The facility will cover a yard area of approximately 60 hectares.
This new development is scheduled to be commissioned in late 2011/early 2012, coinciding with the completion of new pan-European-gauge rail links, which will run directly into the Muelle Prat terminal. This new rail connection will facilitate more frequent and competitive train services from France andthe rest of Europe directly into TERCAT. |
